Lawrence County Cooperative Extension Service and Lawrence County Health Department are the lead agencies for the Obesity priority issue.

Goals will be accomplished on a weekly, monthly, and annual basis continuing throughout the CHIP cycle. Workgroups will meet at least quarterly to review progress toward meeting goals. Workgroups will report progress to the Health Action Team on a quarterly basis. This plan is a living document and goals will be updated as needed.

Priority Issue #2: Obesity

Goal #1: Decrease the proportion of person who are overweight and/or obese.

  • Increase participation in Lawrence County Cooperative Extension Services Healthy Eating programs by 10% per year through 2027 using 2023 as a baseline.
  • Increase number of eligible people completing the National Diabetes Prevention Program (NDPP) or similar program by 25% by December 2025 using a 2023 as a baseline.
  • Develop and disseminate 5-2-1-0 Healthy Numbers for Kentucky Families Program or similar program for adults and children by December 2024.
  • Increase participation at Farmer’s Market by 10% per year through 2027 using 2023 as a baseline.
  • Increase enrollment in the WIC Program by 10% each year through 2027 using 2023 as a baseline.

Goal # 2: Increase the number of persons who engage in physical activity.

  • Increase the opportunities for physical and recreational activities by expanding accessibility to walking paths/trails throughout the county by December 2025.
  • Provide access to free or low-cost recreation and exercise opportunities for adults and children by January 2027. (Examples — Family Fitness Fair, Step Challenges, Fitness Friday, Trail Hike Sunday, school playgrounds, basketball courts, and gyms.)
  • Increase participation in annual Turkey Trot and other 5K events by 10% by December 2025.
